Let me introduce China, a chinchilla angora doe,

and 

Kanelia, a black angora doe.

I have lots more to share about the last half of 2014, but I want to share today's news before it is tomorrow!

The light colored chicks hatched in the middle of july and are mostly Isbar. They (as adult hens) lay green eggs, and a good size. It looks to me like they all look the same, and that they have small combs. Do I dare think I may have 5 hens?? That would help balance out the hen/rooster tally. As you can see, they are still small chicks, but are gaining on their Mother. This hen is called Kerstin. 

These dark chicks have an Araucana hen and an Ancona rooster for genes. Araucana lay turquoise eggs, and a good size, so I am very happy that there are two that should be hens. Two are roosters, and one of the four chicks I think has a Hedemora hen mother. Three look rather alike, so I have a hard time getting it straight yet, since they run away from me still. They don't understand that I am not dangerous. Go figure!  

This dark chick is black with brown feather tips. Celebration...she is a hen! She has black feet, comb. beak, and eyes, and she has been named Sotis Jr. Our first all black hen was called Sotis and we lost her to a disease in about March/April. We are very happy with a junior.   

This dark chick is also a hen I think. It does not have a name. Neither do the Isbar chicks. They are VERY similar!

I think this is an Araucana hen. Notice the nice white speckles in the dark feathers. Yellow feet, mostly yellow beak, yellow comb I expect will change to red, and I think light eyes. 

The Isbar have started to note rank, testing to see who is taller and so on. It is quite fun. They are not nearly as easy to catch and hold since we now have more animals and the calm has dissappeared to some degree. The birds have a habit of being VERY sensitive to each others body language and calls. Chickens are always worried for danger. Our birds are however not of the most skittish kind. Each kind has its own temperment, and from their also own personalities.

It is great fun to watch them forage for food, bathe in the dirt, jump to pick currents, and just take it easy in a sunny spot in the grass.

And I am especially happy that they accompany me out in the yard when I am home...great company. They follow me around where ever I go, or hang around where I happen to be, looking for bugs, seeds, worms, berries...not me, the birds!

My chicken flock looks very different now than it did in april. I remember then I had 4 hens, and had just lost one to disease. I wanted to give my ladies the company of a gentleman that would protect and care for them, as a good rooster does. I wanted to give my own children the experience of new life and raising chicks. I smile realizing I have succeeded. 

The first weekend in May we were blessed with 8 chicks, of which all have survived so far. We have 7 roosters and one hen, nearly 16 weeks old. In this foto above you see Frosty and Olaf in front and Ghost standing further off. Our other yellow chick that became white is called Snow and has yellow feet, yellow beak, red comb and white feathers. Olaf is a light beige, I am not sure if the color is called sand or wheat...he has a yellow beak and yellow feet and a red comb. Ghost as white feet, a white beak, and a red comb with white feathers. Frosty has a yellow beak, white feet, a darkred comb and white feathers. 

The chick that was grey with dark feet and a dark comb is called "Sten" by my kids, and I call him Blue. He is a beautiful bird with those traits as true character marks. He has a grey/beige color to his feathers, and I think he ranks #1 in the flock of siblings. 

Our only hen is called Pricken because as a chick she was mostly yellow with a grey prick on her head. She has a small comb, perhaps dark, and rather dark feet. Her feathers are a beautiful grey/silver. I don't think she has the color called lavender, but I really don't know. She is a sweetheart, willing to hop into my lap when we are in the yard. There is not much left of the prick on her head, since she darkened, but she does have a small prick of yellow on the tip of her dark beak, so the name still fits.

Tieara has had a namechange...my boys said he can not be called Tieara, that is a name for a hen. So he's called "Bruno" now. He has a yellow beak, yellow feet, a red comb and wonderful brown/yellow/gold feathers. He is very easy to handle, easiest of the roosters to catch and hold.

Fluffy is not a dvärg cochin like I thought he was. No one knows what he is...gotta be a Hedemora mixed with a silkes or something. I have not contacted the people I got eggs from. But he is definately a rooster.

We will be keeping Pricken and a rooster from this bunch. They are growing well, most all are over 1,3 kilos now. That is almost 3 pounds. If I can not find good homes for the 6 "extra" roosters, we will be having them for supper. That was part of the concept when we started with chickens almost a year ago. It is actually one year ago on Monday that we bought the chickencoop.

Pricken has not started laying eggs but we are guessing she will in about a month or so. The roosters have matured into the mating stage. I think my hens are pretty happy about that, to be honest. They have been missing a partner, so I am glad that frustration is relieved. Now I just have to figure out who is the best rooster, the nicest, cares for the hens well, as well as the chicks. Time will tell, I guess. Not sure if that is best seen when they are about 5½ months old.

I am very happy to be on this journey, and it is much more fun than I ever imagined it would be. When I go outside, they all come say hi, follow me around, and talk and talk. They are really great fun. And easy to care for, at least so far. Tomorrow I will tell you about the other chicks.....wishing you a great day!

The last month has been rather hectic so I have lots to share as I reflect.

I feel truly lucky to have this wonderful home. It blesses me with tranquility, food, gardening pleasure, a home for bees and chickens, not to mention a home for my family.

5 new chicks that hatched the 25th, lost one on the 27th, and think that of the four we now have, we may have a hen!   There are at least two with very BIG combs. One with a little one...

Sorry, I don't have any pictures, but Kerstin has two chicks, a week old now, and Lotta has three.

We don't know the gender, but one is named Dizzy since when it gets stressed and doesn't know what to do, so it chirps and runs in circles!

They are growing fast and have be beginnings of tailfeathers and nice feathers on their wings. Isbar is a good flier, so we will see how this goes. They lay green eggs, of a fair size! Höna Pöna is sitting on eggs, 2 Hedemora and 5 Auraucana that are also good size and turqouise. They are due to hatch tomorrow. I hope at least one is a hen!

We woke up to rain this morning, so working in the meadow was not on todays list of chores. This dampened my spirits.

         
I have been looking forward to having this cuttingbar pulled by a horse instead of using a cythe alone this year to make hay in the meadow. We hang the hay to dry, then take it down by hand again to store for use in the winter.

However, I quickly went out to the henhouse to check with the hens...we heard faint cherping last night, so today we took a peek, moving Lotta, who was up high with her three chicks...all hatched! Joy. Kerstin sits in her box on the floor, and she has two chicks and two eggs yet to hatch.

YIPPEE! After 8 weeks of waiting, Kerstin too is a mother hen!

Now they each have a box on the floor and will get a "fence" to keep the older chicks from bothering them inside. 

  We are of course happy for the new additions. 10 more days and Höna Pöna will be the new mother hen. She is sitting on 7 eggs, 5 turquoise and 2 beige. Hoping we will have at least a few hens from that bunch.

Nu är slåtterbalken i form och med en hel del tur blir det slåtter i morgon med hjälp av en HÄST! Jippee!

Det är finna minnen som jag har i samband med slåtter i min egen barndom. Vi har slagit ängen i 4 år nu och i år har jag siktat på att vidareutveckla det hela med hästens kraft...påminner mig om Tally som Morfar hadde när jag var 10.

Jag letar nu efter en balja till vatten, och godis till hästen medanst han hälsar på, och lagar själva middagen så den är bara att servera imorgon, mitt i arbetet. Det känns så roligt! När hjässöarna är klara och vi vilar i hamocken, ser jag fram emot att njuta av doften och en vacker solnedgång. Då är hälften klar!

Ekologiska ägg kommer från höns som föds upp och sköts med ekologiska metoder. De ska ha det bra och kunna bete sig naturligt.

Ekologiska höns lever naturligt

Den som har haft tillfälle att iaktta en höna i frihet förstår lätt varför en tillvaro i bur är helt emot hönans naturliga beteende. En naturlig hönsflock är ett samhälle i miniatyr med en tupp som härskar över ett harem. Flocken har en strikt rangordning där storlek, styrka och ålder avgör var i ordningen hönan platsar. Läten, kroppsställningar och rörelser är hönsens sätt att ”tala” och tuppen bevakar reviret exempelvis genom att gala.

Hönan har en hel rad beteenden som hon behöver få utföra för att må bra. En viktig sysselsättning för en höna är att leta mat. Det gör hon genom att sprätta i marken och detta är ett djupt rotat beteende hos höns. Därför har ekologiska höns tillgång till en rasthage som är bevuxen med gräs och annat grönt där de kan beta och picka. På vintern när de är inomhus har de tillgång till hö eller rotfrukter.På så sätt får hönorna sysselsättning, motion och näring. En annan stark drift hos hönan är att putsa sin fjäderdräkt och att sandbada så att hon kan hålla löss och andra parasiter borta.

När höns i fritt tillstånd ska sova flyger de upp i träd för att skydda sig från rovdjur. Därför är hönshuset där hönorna vistas nattetid och på vintern utrustat med sittpinnar som de kan flyga upp och sova på. Det finns också en ströbädd och tillräckligt med utrymme att röra sig på. Hönshuset släpper in dagsljus, men hönsen får också minst åtta timmars nattmörker.

Att värpa ett ägg är för hönan att föda barn. Hennes instinkt är då att bygga bo åt sina ägg och kycklingar. En ekologisk höna har tillgång till ett rede att värpa i. När en höna sitter i bur försöker hon ändå utföra dessa beteenden och när de hindras blir de lätt stressade. Därför finns det nu en lag som säger att alla höns ska ha rede.

I naturligt tillstånd ruvar hönan på sina ägg i 21 dagar. De nykläckta kycklingarna präglas direkt på mammans utseende och läte och viker sedan inte från hennes sida. Hönan visar ungarna maten genom att krafsa och då och då lyfter hon fjädrarna så de kan krypa in och värma sig. De flesta ekologiska äggproducenter köper in unghöns när de är ungefär 16 veckor gamla. Dessa unghöns har inte fötts upp av sina mammor, men har fått röra sig fritt och sova på sittpinne. Det finns också flera ekologiska producenter som föder upp egna kycklingar i mindre skala.

Hur många höns får man ha?

De ekologiska äggen kommer både från små besättningar och från specialiserade enheter med upp till 30 000 höns. Som mest får man ha 3 000 hönor i en avdelning. De som har riktigt stora besättningar delar upp flocken i flera mindre flockar. Det finns också olika modeller på hönshus. En modell är mobila hus som kan flyttas mellan rasthagarna.

Vad äter en ekologisk höna?

Höns är allätare. De tycker om säd, gröna växter och frön, men de tycker lika mycket om insekter och mask och annat som inte är vegetabiliskt. Sådant hittar hönan genom att sprätta och picka i marken.

I naturligt tillstånd värper hönan ungefär ett ägg om dagen tills dess att det blivit en kull att ruva. Men aveln av värphöns som bedrivits de senaste decennierna har nästan uteslutande inriktats på att få fram extremt högproducerande sorter, så kallade hybridhöns. En sådan höna värper ungefär 300 ägg om året och kräver ett näringsmässigt väl sammansatt foder. Huvuddelen av näringen får djuren från spannmål som kompletteras med proteinfoder och mineraler. Proteinfodret kan vara vegetabiliskt som ärtor och raps, men också bestå av fiskmjöl och mjölkprodukter.

Proteiner består av aminosyror och den aminosyra som främst begränsar hönans förmåga att värpa så stora mängder ägg heter metionin. Om hönan inte får tillräckligt med metionin kan hon drabbas av beteendestörningar som att hacka på andra hönor i gruppen eller rycka fjädrar ur deras fjäderdräkt. I konventionell produktion tillsätter man syntetiskt metionin till fodret. Eftersom det har tillverkats på konstgjord väg är det inte tillåtet i ekologiskt foder. I stället tillåter KRAV fiskmjöl som är rikt på naturligt metionin i fodret.

Naturlig uppfödning ger friskare djur

Det är viktigt att erbjuda hönsen ett stressfritt liv, bra foder, rent stall och god tillsyn för att de ska hålla sig friska och ha det bra. Att leva sitt liv i bur innebär många nackdelar för hönan, men en fördel är att risken för besvärande tarmparasiter minskar när hönorna hålls avskilda från varandra. När hönsen går fritt måste man därför vara mycket noga med hygienen och kontrollera att hönorna mår bra. Det är också tillåtet att vaccinera hönsen mot de vanligaste sjukdomarna.

Hoppas mina tre ruvande hönor får fram några till hönor för det arbete de håller på med i värmen!
